Peko Peko: Family-Friendly Japanese Recipes (& a giveaway!)

PekoPekoCover

Peko Peko: Family-Friendly Japanese Recipes

by Stacie Billis, Rachael Hutchings, and Marc Matsumoto

Publication Date: 2011

Featured Recipe: Spicy Tuna on Crispy Rice

Peko Peko: Family-Friendly Japanese Recipes is a collection of nearly 50 family-friendly Japanese and Japanese-inspired recipes. 100% of the profits from sales of Peko Peko will be donated to the GlobalGiving Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fund. A joint effort of brainchild Stacie Billis of One Hungry Mama, co-conspirators Rachael Hutchings of La Fuji Mama and Marc Matsumoto of No Recipes, and a team of contributors that includes some of today’s most influential food bloggers and cookbook authors, Peko Peko is a celebration of the Japanese people, their food, and their culture.

While the curators’ number-one goal is to raise as much money as possible for the children of Japan, the creative impetus behind Peko Peko is their belief that food is a common language that brings people together. “Our hope is to use food to spark meaningful connections between everyone involved — the organizers, contributors, sponsors, and donors — to the people of Japan. Our hope is that these recipes say: We are here for you Japan, with love.”

Here at Cooks&Books&Recipes, as our way to contribute to the cause, we’ve ordered a copy of Peko Peko to give away to one lucky reader of C&B&R (details below). If you’re a fan of Japanese food, you’ll want this cookbook. If, like me, you’re a bit intimidated by the idea of Japanese cooking, you’ll want this book too! Because in addition to exotic-sounding recipes such as  Kinpira GoboPork, Shiitake Mushroom Gyoza, and Kale Chips with Gomashio, there are plenty of more-accessible recipes: Edamame-Spinach Dip, Green Beans in Sesame Dressing, Grilled Teriyaki Shrimp, Tangy Mustard Stir-Fry, and Simple Green Tea Ice Cream.

What the heck does “Peko Peko” mean? For the answer to that question, you’ll have to check out the cookbook website. But first, to help you get a feel for the cookbook, we asked the super-talented, amazingly energetic, and always helpful food blogger and writer Marnely (Nelly) Rodriguez, from Cooking with Books, for a review. If you don’t yet know Nelly, a CIA grad and former pastry chef, from her blog or Twitter or Facebook, well you should.

Cooks&Books&Recipes Guest Cook: Marnely (Nelly) Rodriguez, Cooking with Books

A collaboration of food bloggers, writers, and editors, Peko Peko surfaced — when Japan was hit the hardest — as a way to collect funds for the country, as well as unite everyone in a common element: food. The food bloggers showcase recipes, some traditional and others adapted to the times; they share stories, memories, and the reasons why they were linked to this cause and Japan itself. A gorgeous effort by everyone, the book has an accessible layout and an introduction on how to get global foods and flavors on the family table. “The Basics” section details ingredients that might not be so common on your table, but after you’ve read and cooked from Peko Peko, they will be as common as the salt you use!
