Friends at the Table shows how to take the elements of supper clubs and re-create them in an evening of fine dining at home, without the expense of a restaurant. Included are ready-made grocery lists and plan-ahead tips to ease the stress of entertaining, as well as full menus with a variety of themes to help execute a gorgeous meal, making the experience as enjoyable for the hostess as it is for the guest. The planning has already been done, from preparing shopping lists to providing easy-to-follow recipes, selecting music, and creating a beautiful table decor.

The author, Debi Shawcross, owns Signature Menus, providing specialized cooking classes and dinner club instructional sessions that cater to private parties and corporate events. She blogs at Table Talk.

My favorite part is that the recipes are grouped in complete meals. And they’re organized by seasons — that’s my favorite part. And Debi gives a shopping list for each meal — right, that’s my favorite part. Oh, she also offers plan-ahead tips and wine pairing suggestions and the equipment needed for each menu. OK, everything adds up to a favorite cookbook.

For example? I’m having a dinner party with the following “Fall Favorite” menu:

Appetizer – Endive Cups Filled with Roquefort, Lemon, and Walnuts

Soup: Roasted  Butternut Squash Soup

Entree: Pork Roulade with Pancetta, Fennel, and Port Wine Sauce

Side: Spinach Cakes

Dessert: Apple Crumble Pie

I don’t even have to put together the shopping list, because Debi did that for me already. Cooking from Friends at the Table is like having my own personal dinner party planner. So I can relax and enjoy my own party. THAT is my favorite part.
