Ten Best-Selling Cookbooks, 2012

At the start of the year, we introduced you to two “meta-lists” (lists of lists) of the critics’ choices for the best cookbooks of 2012: the Eat Your Books annual list and Eater’s “Meta Listicle of Listicles.”

Then, a couple weeks back, Publishers Weekly published its list of the top-selling cookbooks of 2012. As is often the case with “best of” lists in any category (restaurants, movies, novels), what the critics say we should pay attention to and what we actually spend our money on are often quite different. In this case, only one cookbook made both of the meta-lists and also the best-selling list: The Smitten Kitchen Cookbook, by Deb Perelman.

Not surprisingly, the Huffington Post criticized the list as a result of “the power of the food blog and the power of the celebrity chef again.”
