Poor Girl Gourmet Cookbook Giveaway
We are excited to be holding our first cookbook giveaway and even more excited about the cookbook to be given away. Thanks to sponsor Andrews McMeel Publishing, one lucky Cooks&Books&Recipes contest participant will receive a copy of Amy McCoy’s Poor Girl Gourmet: Eat in Style on a Bare-Bones Budget. We first highlighted this cookbook on August 27, when Cooks&Books&Recipes Featured Cook Katie reviewed the Height of Summer Blueberry Crumble.
We admit that when we initially picked up this cookbook, we were a bit put off by the “Bare-Bones Budget” part of the subtitle. We don’t have a family to feed, and although we’re certainly not extravagant in our cooking, cost is generally not our prime concern. (Then again, we’re not quite Gourmet in our cooking either.) But after flipping through the book and looking first at the abundance of gorgeous, close-up color photos and then at the simple-yet-distinctive, hunger-inducing recipes, we couldn’t wait to try a few. Now, as we noted in our first review, we can’t quit making dishes from this one. We too made the Blueberry (or, rather, Blackberry) Crumble, which one taster deemed to be an excellent breakfast. And also the Southwestern-Style Cobb Salad (we enjoy a cook who gets somewhat obsessed with where to place the salad ingredients). And the mouthwateringly tender Braised Pork Shoulder. And the Oatmeal-Wheat Beer Bread (see below). To our surprise, we’ve discovered that with McCoy’s cookbook, we’re spending less money and cooking more elegantly in spite of our natural tendencies!
What we did not mention in our earlier review is that the book also has a chapter on Value Wines. We like wine with dinner and do watch our dollars when buying it, with $15 and under being a just-right range. And we also neglected to mention the informative sidebars, giving history on such ingredients as pancetta and cinnamon. If you haven’t yet been introduced to McCoy’s entertaining writing in her blog Poor Girl Gourmet, you’re in for a treat.
