Features include 50 mouthwatering, original step-by-step recipes for all times of day; a special sushi section; and the “On Your Mark, Get Set, Cook!” recipe format with step-by-step instructions.
Whether you’re vegetarian or vegan, considering moving away from meat-based cooking, or just looking for inspired approaches to traditional vegetarian recipes, this book is for you.
Cooks&Books&Recipes Editors {Dee}, on Teen Cuisine New Vegetarian:
Teen Cuisine New Vegetarian author Matthew Locricchio is known for his talent in writing gourmet recipes and cookbooks that appeal to young cooks. Judging from this cookbook, I can see why. The book includes sections about overall kitchen safety, knife safety, kitchen essentials (ingredients), kitchen equipment, and chef’s tips. In addition, the recipes give very helpful, detailed instructions. For instance, rather than listing “chopped garlic,” the Three-Cheese Polenta Pie recipe notes: “Slightly crush the garlic by laying the flat side of a chef’s knife on the clove and pressing firmly to break open the skin. Remove the skin, cut off the root end, and discard. Coarsely chop.”
But there is certainly nothing “dumbed down” in this cookbook. The recipes, which vary in difficulty and skill level (with Locricchio offering guidance along the way), call for whole, organic, and local (if possible) ingredients. Locricchio writes: “The teen generation of new cooks can save itself and future generations from eating frozen foods, processed foods, fast foods, additives, and microwave-dependent foods.”
Yes, this cookbook should be an excellent way for teens to learn about vegetarian cooking or to discover new vegetarian recipes. On the other hand, I’m neither a teen nor a vegetarian, and I’m loving Locricchio’s recipes (see my next-to-try list below). I particularly like that all the recipes are coded with “vegetarian,” “vegan,” and “raw” symbols. Another bonus? The absolutely stunning photos by award-winning food photographer James Peterson. All lovers of good food, of all ages, can appreciate this one.
The Cookbook Basics:
Hardcover; 207 pages; 50+ step-by-step recipes; color photos (by James Peterson) of most recipes
Chapters and Sections: Smart Starts; Between the Slices; Snazzy Sips; Sushi-On-a-Roll; Party Hearty Foods; Bowl Me Over; Salad Tosses; Pasta and Polenta Perfects; Big Plates; And on the Side; Just Desserts
Next-to-Try Recipes: Black Bean Hash Browns; Banana-Berry Blender Bender; Sushi Rice; Red, White, and Blue Cheese Potato Salad; Hodgepodge; Snappy Ginger Cookies
About the author: Chef Matthew Locricchio knows a thing or two about cooking. What sets this chef apart from other talented professionals in his field is his knack for imparting this culinary wisdom to children. All of his recipes are original and use organic ingredients. He has cornered the market on gourmet food for teens. He is also the author of Teen Cuisine, The International Cookbook for Kids, The 2nd International Cookbook for Kids, and the Superchef series.
