Weelicious: 140 Fast, Fresh, and Easy Recipes
Every parent knows how difficult it is to get kids eating happily and healthily. Catherine McCord has the answer: Weelicious! Creator of the wildly popular blog Weelicious.com, Catherine, who honed her cooking skills at Manhattan’s Institute of Culinary Education, strongly believes in the “one family/one meal” idea—preparing a single, scrumptious meal that the entire family can sit down and enjoy together rather than having to act as “short order cook” for kids who each want something different. In Weelicious, she offers dozens of recipes and tips for creating quick, easy, healthy, and fun food that moms, dads, and young children of any age will absolutely adore—from the most persnickety infants to the pickiest grade-schoolers.
If you have small kids, no doubt you know all about Catherine McCord’s Weelicious.com blog. I know all about the blog, and I don’t even have small kids (check out the incredibly helpful “how-to of the day” section). Based on her popular blog, the Weelicious cookbook contains not just 140 recipes for families with picky eaters but also helpful sections such as “Good Habits Start from the First Few Bites,” “Food Shopping with Kids,” “Shopping for High-Quality Food at the Lowest Prices Possible,” “Getting Your Kids Involved in the Cooking,” and “Weelicious Cooking Staples.”
When the Weelicious cookbook was published, I wanted to find a reviewer who fit the profile of the cookbook audience. Who better than a busy blogger mom of three? I don’t remember how I first discovered Deborah Harroun’s blog Taste and Tell. Maybe it was her friendly writing style. Or her scrumptious photos. Or her community-building”blogger spotlight.” Or her home state of Utah (where I used to live). She describes her blog: “Here you will find easy, fast, and family-friendly recipes. I am a believer that anyone can cook and that dinner doesn’t have to be complicated. The majority of the dinner recipes featured here can be made in under an hour. I am a mom to 3 of the cutest kids alive and a wife to my best friend. I am so grateful that they all encourage and support me here! I love cookbooks (and love collecting them!) as well as food magazines. I also love developing and creating my own recipes. The kitchen is my happy place.” Aha, maybe it was that love of cookbooks that drew me to Deborah’s Taste and Tell!
Cooks&Books&Recipes Featured Cook Deborah Harroun, Taste and Tell:
Before I had kids, I knew that I never wanted to be a “chicken nugget mom.” I had seen it before: mom goes to lots of trouble to have dinner on the table every night, but since her kids won’t eat, she makes them a separate meal that they will eat. Usually chicken nuggets or sandwiches. Growing up, this was never an option in our house. You either ate what my mom made, or you didn’t eat. So I had it in my mind that I would be the same way when I had kids. When I finally did have kids, I quickly found out that it’s not that easy. Kids are finicky. And you want your kids to be happy. I still won’t make two meals–I’m a stickler about that–but instead I try to usually search out meals that both my kids and my husband and I will like. Enter Weelicious. I knew I would love this cookbook the minute I read on the cover “One Family. One Meal.” This cookbook is filled with nutritious food that everyone in the family will love. And it’s realistic food–food that I wouldn’t hesitate making for my family every day. My kids are still picky eaters, but I know that with food like the recipes in Weelicious, it will be easier to get my kids to try–and, hopefully, love!–new foods.
